A Western Australian postal worker has been charged with alleged mail tampering and package theft offences after an investigation into missing parcels from a mail sorting facility in Perth’s south.

The 57-year-old man was arrested following an investigation involving police and authorities after alleged suspicious activity was identified through workplace records and CCTV footage. Investigators allege the man used his position within the postal system to access and remove packages that were not intended for him.

Police allege the offences occurred while the man was working as a mail sorter, where he had access to large volumes of parcels moving through the postal network. Following inquiries, authorities searched the man’s home and vehicle, where they seized approximately $34,000 in cash as part of the investigation.

The case has raised concerns about trust and security within Australia’s postal system, as postal employees are relied upon to safely handle personal letters, important documents and customer deliveries.

Authorities said investigations into suspected insider offences are taken seriously because postal workers hold positions of public trust. Previous cases involving postal workers stealing or interfering with mail have resulted in criminal charges and court proceedings.

The accused worker is expected to face court over the allegations. The charges remain allegations and have not been proven in court. He is presumed innocent unless found guilty through the legal process.

Australia Post and law enforcement agencies have systems in place to investigate suspected misconduct involving employees and contractors. These investigations can involve reviewing workplace access records, parcel tracking information, surveillance footage and financial evidence.

The alleged incident has also highlighted the importance of parcel security as online shopping continues to grow across Australia. Millions of parcels are processed each year, with customers relying on delivery networks for everything from household purchases to important documents.

Authorities have encouraged anyone who believes their mail or parcels may have been affected to report concerns through the appropriate channels.

Police investigations into the matter are continuing, and further charges or information may emerge as investigators review evidence and speak with affected customers.
