What began as a temporary break from alcohol during pregnancy turned into a four-year personal journey for journalist Natalie Jones. Although she did not experience major physical health changes, Jones says giving up alcohol led to a profound emotional and personal transformation. Having lived and worked in Kalgoorlie and Broome, where drinking was a central part of social life, she initially felt uneasy about refusing alcohol and worried about how others would react. Over time, she realised that her friendships and social connections remained unchanged, regardless of whether she drank. This shift in perspective helped her overcome social pressure and discover a more confident and authentic version of herself. Jones says living alcohol-free allowed her to “shed a skin” and reveal a braver, bolder personality.
