Queensland Police have identified the woman killed in the tourist bus rollover on the Bruce Highway near Gumlu as a 26-year-old dual Argentine and Italian national. The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon when a coach carrying 28 passengers and a driver left the road and rolled onto its side on a remote section of highway between Ayr and Bowen. Authorities said a large proportion of the passengers were international tourists travelling from Cairns to Airlie Beach. Two people remained in hospital following the incident, while emergency crews transported injured passengers to hospitals in Ayr, Bowen and Townsville. The 70-year-old driver sustained minor injuries. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described the incident as a tragedy, noting that many of those involved were young travellers exploring Australia. The crash has renewed calls for safety upgrades to the Bruce Highway, particularly on the isolated stretch near Gumlu where another fatal bus accident occurred in 2024. The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing its investigation and has appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage.
