An 81-year-old man from Broken Hill, New South Wales, has died following a serious assault, with police now preparing a report for the coroner.

Police said the man was seriously assaulted on September 12. He suffered head injuries and fractured ribs during the incident.

According to police, a 38-year-old man known to the victim allegedly threatened him with a knife before assaulting him and stealing cash. The accused was subsequently arrested at a motel in Dubbo, about 750 kilometres from Broken Hill.

The man, identified in police reporting as Ahmed Warsame, was charged following his arrest and did not apply for bail. Police have continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault.

The victim remained in hospital following the incident but was later reported to have died from his injuries. Police were informed of his death on Wednesday, September 30.

Because the death followed the earlier assault, authorities are now preparing information for the NSW Coroner. The coroner's process will consider the circumstances surrounding the man's death and the available evidence.

The incident has shocked the Broken Hill community, where emergency services and police continue to investigate serious incidents affecting the regional city.

Police have not indicated that the investigation is complete. Further proceedings may follow depending on the findings of the investigation and the coroner's examination.

The death also highlights the seriousness of the original assault, which police allege involved a weapon, physical violence and the theft of cash. The accused person remains before the court process, and the allegations have not been determined by a court.

Broken Hill is a major regional centre in far-western New South Wales, and incidents involving serious violence can require coordination between local police, hospitals and investigators in other regional centres.

The latest information was published by ABC Broken Hill on October 1, 2026, in its morning regional news briefing. Police confirmed that a report is being prepared for the coroner following the man's death.
