Adelaide Crows defender Josh Worrell has been charged following an alleged crash involving a pedestrian in Adelaide and is expected to face court at a later date. The incident occurred on Friday morning as Worrell was driving to the club's training facilities at West Lakes.
Video footage broadcast by 7NEWS allegedly shows Worrell driving a Toyota Hilux along Port Road before colliding with a 29-year-old pedestrian who was crossing the road. The footage reportedly shows Worrell stopping immediately after the collision and assisting the injured man before transporting him to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
According to South Australia Police, Worrell has been reported for:
Aggravated driving without due care Failing to present to police within 90 minutes of the incident
Police allege the pedestrian sustained a head injury during the collision. The extent of the injuries has not been publicly detailed beyond initial reports.
Worrell has not yet appeared in court and has not entered a plea. As the matter is before the courts, the allegations have not been proven.
South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stephens confirmed he was not briefed on the investigation because he serves on the Adelaide Football Club's board, creating a potential conflict of interest. Oversight of the matter has instead been handled by the Deputy Commissioner.
The Adelaide Football Club said it would not comment further while legal proceedings are ongoing but confirmed Worrell remained available for team selection. Coach Matthew Nicks described the incident as a difficult experience for the player and said the club was supporting him through the process.
Police will formally summon Worrell to appear before court at a later date, where the charges will be considered.
