Brisbane’s new Victoria Park stadium has moved into the next stage of its construction process after the BESIX Watpac and John Holland joint venture was selected as the sole finalist to negotiate the building contract.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as preparations continue for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The proposed stadium at Victoria Park is planned to accommodate up to 63,000 spectators and is scheduled to host the Games’ opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics.

The Victoria Park site was handed over to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority in June, and early earthworks are already underway. The selected consortium will now work with the stadium design team and the authority to finalise design details, construction methods and contractual arrangements.

BESIX Watpac and John Holland have experience delivering major Australian sporting venues. Their previous projects include Suncorp Stadium, the Gabba, Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium and Penrith Stadium.

The current process does not yet represent a final construction contract. Detailed negotiations are expected to continue before contracts are finalised in the new year. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2027.

The stadium forms part of the wider Brisbane 2032 Games infrastructure program. The venue program is being delivered within a broader $7.1 billion funding arrangement for Games infrastructure, while the stadium itself has previously been estimated at around $3.6 billion. Officials have said the final contractual arrangements will be determined through the ongoing negotiations.

The new stadium is planned to have a role beyond the Olympic and Paralympic Games. After the Games, it is expected to become the home venue for the Brisbane Lions AFL team and provide a major venue for cricket, including the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls. It is also planned as a venue for major concerts and other large events.

The project is being designed by COX, Hassell and Japanese stadium specialist Azusa Sekkei. Early works at Victoria Park have already begun, meaning activity at the site is progressing while the main construction contract is being negotiated.

For Brisbane residents, the project represents a major change to the Victoria Park area, with the future stadium intended to connect with surrounding parkland and transport infrastructure.

Authorities are continuing to work through the commercial and technical details before the main construction phase begins. The next major milestone will be the finalisation of the construction contract.

With the 2032 Games less than six years away, the latest announcement moves the Victoria Park stadium project further from planning and procurement towards its main construction phase.
