What began as a search for a peaceful countryside escape has evolved into a successful tourism destination for Michael and Rachel Jarman, who have transformed a Scenic Rim retreat near Mt Barney into a popular getaway for visitors while creating their own refuge from demanding professional lives.

The couple purchased Tuckeroo Cottages and Gardens in Rathdowney after looking for a property within comfortable driving distance of both Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Michael works as a mortgage broker while Rachel serves as a police officer, careers that can often involve long hours and significant stress. Seeking a place where they could unwind and reconnect with nature, they found the ideal location in the heart of Queensland's Scenic Rim region.

Since taking ownership, the pair have invested heavily in improving the property while preserving its natural beauty. Among the additions are two new two-bedroom cabins and a large 12-metre swimming pool, with further plans to upgrade event and gathering facilities. Their goal has been to create a retreat that caters to a wide variety of travellers, from couples seeking a romantic weekend away to large family groups celebrating special occasions.

The retreat enjoys spectacular views of some of the region's most iconic landmarks, including Mt Maroon, Mt Lindesay and Mt Barney. According to the owners, the mountain scenery was one of the main reasons they chose the property. Large windows in the accommodation have been designed to maximise views of the surrounding landscape, allowing guests to wake up to panoramic mountain vistas.

Accommodation options vary from intimate one-bedroom cottages to larger family-friendly facilities. The main house can accommodate up to 13 guests, while the entire property can host as many as 29 people. This flexibility has made it popular for family reunions, birthday celebrations, group retreats and holiday gatherings.

A major attraction is the property's connection to nature. Guests regularly encounter native wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras and king parrots. The owners are also working to enhance local biodiversity by planting nectar-rich flora, fruit trees and habitat features aimed at attracting more birdlife.

The surrounding Scenic Rim region offers abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors frequently explore nearby hiking destinations such as Lower Portals, Upper Portals and Yellow Pinch Lookout in the Mt Barney area. Others enjoy winery tours, scenic drives and rural food experiences that have helped establish the Scenic Rim as one of Queensland's premier tourism destinations.

The property also features communal facilities including a wood-fired pizza oven and outdoor dining spaces where guests can enjoy meals while taking in the mountain scenery. According to the owners, many visitors simply come to disconnect from technology and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

As tourism continues to grow across the Scenic Rim, properties such as Tuckeroo Cottages and Gardens highlight the increasing appeal of rural escapes that combine natural beauty, outdoor adventure and relaxation. For the Jarmans, the retreat has become more than a business venture—it is also a personal sanctuary that offers relief from the demands of modern city life.
