A 45-year-old man, Corum Ash, has been charged with murder after a 74-year-old man died following an alleged assault in Yennora, in Sydney’s south-west. Police allege the elderly man was attacked while on his regular morning walk before being found seriously injured on the side of the road.
Emergency services were called to Orchardleigh Street, Yennora, at about 4:40am on Saturday after reports that a man had been found unconscious with significant head injuries. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.
Police said initial investigations indicated the man may have been assaulted while completing his usual early morning walk. The victim was described as a local resident who was well known in the community. He was married and had six children.
Following the incident, detectives from Fairfield City Police Area Command established a crime scene and launched Strike Force Furena to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack. Officers conducted extensive inquiries, including searching a property in Carlingford where several items believed to be connected to the investigation were seized.
Police released images of Corum Ash during the investigation and urged members of the public not to approach him if seen, instead advising them to contact emergency services. Authorities said Ash was known to frequent areas including Carlingford, Fairfield and surrounding suburbs.
Ash was later arrested at a Carlingford property and taken to Parramatta Police Station. Following the death of the elderly man, police upgraded the charges from attempted murder-related allegations to murder. He was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and common assault relating to another alleged incident.
The accused appeared before Parramatta Local Court, where bail was refused. The matter will continue through the court process, and the allegations against Ash have not been proven. Under Australian law, he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until the case is determined by the court.
The incident has shocked residents in Yennora, with neighbours describing the elderly man as a peaceful person who regularly walked through the area. Community members expressed concern following the violent incident, particularly because the attack allegedly occurred during a routine daily activity.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV footage or dashcam recordings from the area around the time of the incident to come forward.
