Dreamworld on the Gold Coast has received approval for a major expansion project that will transform the iconic theme park into a larger mixed-use tourism and lifestyle precinct. The Queensland Government’s approval allows Dreamworld to progress with a long-term masterplan designed to expand tourism facilities, create new accommodation options and support future growth in the region.
The approved Dreamworld Masterplan will expand the existing precinct at Coomera and introduce a combination of new tourism attractions, resort-style accommodation, hospitality venues, entertainment spaces and residential development. The project aims to strengthen the Gold Coast’s position as one of Australia’s leading tourism destinations, particularly ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Dreamworld’s owner, Coast Entertainment Holdings, said the approval provides certainty for future investment and creates an opportunity to develop a world-class destination that combines entertainment, tourism and community facilities. The expansion is expected to create new jobs and attract more visitors to the northern Gold Coast region.
The development will include additional accommodation options such as hotels and resort facilities, helping address the shortage of visitor accommodation in the area. Plans also include restaurants, function spaces, retail and entertainment areas, creating a broader destination experience beyond traditional theme park attractions.
The project will also include new residential and mixed-use areas, with the government highlighting potential benefits including increased housing supply and economic growth. The precinct is planned across multiple zones, including continued expansion of Dreamworld and White Water World, tourism experiences, hospitality areas and residential developments.
Supporters of the expansion say it will provide significant benefits for the Gold Coast economy by creating construction jobs, supporting local businesses and increasing tourism investment. The project is expected to contribute to the region’s preparation for increased visitor numbers linked to the 2032 Olympic Games.
However, the expansion has also attracted criticism from environmental groups concerned about impacts on local ecosystems, including potential impacts on koala habitat. Environmental conditions and management requirements have been included as part of the approval process.
Traffic and infrastructure have also been raised as concerns, with some residents and experts previously warning that additional visitors and development could increase pressure on roads around Coomera and the northern Gold Coast. Authorities have included conditions requiring attention to transport impacts as the project progresses.
Dreamworld has been a major Queensland tourism attraction for decades, and the expansion represents one of the biggest redevelopment plans in the park’s history. The project is expected to roll out in stages over several years, with further approvals required for individual developments.
