A remote cattle station in the Northern Territory could become the site of one of Australia's largest artificial intelligence infrastructure projects, with Energy North proposing a massive hyperscale data centre at Murranji Station in the Barkly region.
The project, known as Project Ares, is designed to support the rapidly growing demand for artificial intelligence computing, cloud services and digital infrastructure. The proposed facility would have a total information technology capacity of 1 gigawatt, making it one of the most ambitious data centre developments planned in Australia.
The development is planned across a large area of Murranji Station, located south of Daly Waters and near Elliott. The project would include large data halls, renewable energy infrastructure, gas-fired power generation, battery storage, worker accommodation, access roads and other supporting facilities.
Energy North says the remote location provides several advantages, including access to renewable energy resources, available land, proximity to telecommunications connections and separation from major population centres. The company believes the site could become a strategic location for Australia's future digital economy.
The proposed project would include a large-scale solar farm covering thousands of hectares, alongside battery storage and gas-powered electricity generation to provide reliable energy for the data centre. The combination of renewable and firm power is intended to support the continuous electricity requirements of artificial intelligence computing facilities.
Data centres require significant amounts of electricity because they operate thousands of computer servers used for processing and storing information. With global demand for AI technology increasing rapidly, companies around the world are investing in larger and more powerful computing facilities.
Energy North estimates the project could create hundreds of ongoing jobs and thousands of construction opportunities during development. The company says it will continue consultation with Traditional Owners, local communities and neighbouring pastoral leaseholders as the proposal progresses.
However, the proposal has also raised environmental concerns, particularly around water use and energy generation. The project assessment documents indicate that groundwater extraction would be required for drinking water and cooling purposes, with proposed limits of up to several gigalitres per year.
Environmental groups have questioned the impact of large-scale data centres in remote regions, including concerns about water resources, land disturbance and the use of gas-fired power. Supporters argue that the Northern Territory has significant potential to attract technology investment because of its energy resources and strategic location near Asian markets.
The project is currently undergoing environmental assessment and public consultation. The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority has opened consultation on Project Ares, allowing community members and stakeholders to provide feedback before further decisions are made.
The proposed Murranji Station development highlights the growing connection between Australia's energy sector and the global artificial intelligence boom.
