Motorists in Leopold, near Geelong, were forced to navigate floodwaters after heavy rainfall inundated Melaluka Road outside Gateway Plaza on 1 July 2026, creating hazardous driving conditions during the afternoon. Emergency services and traffic management crews responded to the scene as water covered sections of the roadway, disrupting access to one of the area's busiest shopping precincts.
At the height of the flooding, water on the road reached just above ankle depth, prompting authorities to implement temporary traffic management measures. Vehicles were initially directed onto the opposite side of the road to safely pass through the flooded section, while police monitored traffic and assisted motorists. Drivers of smaller vehicles were seen avoiding the flooded area by taking nearby side streets, whereas larger four-wheel drives and SUVs continued through the water, sending large splashes across the roadway.
By approximately 4:30 pm, emergency services and traffic controllers had left the site after water levels began to recede, leaving motorists to assess conditions and proceed with caution. A worker was observed carrying out maintenance near the flooded area, reportedly using a wrench to adjust roadside infrastructure, although authorities did not immediately confirm the nature of the work.
Despite the flooding, public transport services continued operating normally, with buses still travelling along Melaluka Road. Access to businesses within Gateway Plaza remained available, although drivers experienced delays while negotiating the water-covered roadway.
A local resident who witnessed the flooding said water had earlier risen above the roadside gutter before subsiding significantly within about 30 minutes. Water was also seen flowing over an embankment near the nearby McDonald's restaurant, illustrating the intensity of the afternoon downpour.
