Former Australian sprint champion Jake Doran has been charged with an alleged child sex offence following a police investigation in North Queensland. The 26-year-old, who lives on Magnetic Island near Townsville, was arrested last week, according to a report published by ABC News on Thursday, 22 October 2026.

Police allege the offence relates to the indecent treatment of children between January 2025 and September 2026. Doran has been charged with one count of indecent treatment of a child under 16. Police granted him bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on 5 November 2026.

The case has also prompted action from Australian Athletics, the national governing body for the sport. The organisation confirmed it had imposed a provisional ban based on information provided to it. The restriction prevents Doran from attending club events or participating in athletics training while the matter proceeds.

Australian Athletics said the former international athlete does not hold a paid or unpaid role within the organisation. It also stated that the safety and wellbeing of participants were paramount and that allegations of this nature were treated seriously.

Doran previously established himself as a prominent Australian sprinter. His personal best in the 100 metres is 10.15 seconds, making him Australia's equal ninth-fastest athlete over the distance. He competed in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, reaching the semi-finals, and previously won two national titles. He also represented Australia at two world championships.

The allegations have placed his athletics career under scrutiny, although the provisional sporting ban is separate from the criminal court process. The court will consider the charge under the applicable legal procedures, and any findings will depend on the evidence presented.

The investigation concerns alleged conduct over a period extending from early 2025 to September 2026. Authorities have not publicly provided further details about the allegation in the report, and no additional charges were listed in the ABC account.

Doran has been charged but has not been convicted. He is presumed innocent unless the charge is proven in court. The scheduled appearance in November will be the next identified stage in the legal proceedings.
