Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre has welcomed more than 12,200 people during its first month of operation, marking a strong start for the new waterfront venue and providing a boost to Geelong’s tourism and hospitality sectors. The centre hosted 15 events during July, ranging from major conferences and expos to community celebrations and gala events.

The venue’s opening month included the Geelong Careers Expo, the Barwon Health Foundation Gala Ball, the Business Managers Victoria Annual Leadership Conference, the Associations Forum National Conference and the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative NAIDOC Ball.

Thousands of local residents also visited the venue during its community open day, giving people an opportunity to explore the new facility and experience a major addition to Geelong’s waterfront precinct.

Nyaal Banyul officially opened in July as part of the Geelong City Deal. Its first month of activity has demonstrated the centre’s ability to attract both local audiences and visitors from across Australia.

The venue’s management says the strong early attendance is particularly significant because major conferences can generate benefits well beyond the building itself. Visitors attending conferences and events can stay in local hotels, eat at restaurants and cafes, visit attractions and spend money with local businesses.

Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine has also highlighted the importance of attracting national conferences to the region. Delegates travelling to Geelong for major events can contribute to accommodation demand and increased activity throughout the city's hospitality and tourism precincts.

The centre has been designed to accommodate a wide variety of events, making it possible for Geelong to host larger conferences and national gatherings that previously may have been held in Melbourne or other major Australian cities.

Local businesses are expected to benefit as the venue continues to build its event calendar. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, event suppliers and other service providers can all receive additional business when large groups travel to the city.

The strong opening month also comes as Geelong continues to develop its reputation as a destination for business events, tourism and cultural activities. The waterfront location provides an additional attraction for visitors attending conferences, while the city’s growing hospitality and accommodation sectors can support longer stays.
