A Mackay-based mining services company has achieved a major industry milestone after being crowned Queensland Mining Contractor of the Year at the 2026 Queensland Mining Awards.

FMS Group, which has its headquarters in Mackay, was recognised for its outstanding work in improving mining maintenance, reducing equipment downtime and developing innovative solutions for some of the sector’s most challenging problems. The company was selected from more than 70 entries across eight award categories, with 26 finalists competing for recognition at the state mining industry event.

Judges highlighted FMS Group’s focus on practical innovation and engineering excellence, particularly its solutions designed to improve safety and productivity at mine sites. The company entered three projects into the awards, including its Dipper Skid System, which helped reduce electric shovel shutdown periods by between 24 and 36 hours, allowing mining operations to return to production faster.

Another standout achievement recognised by the judges was FMS Group’s Safety Lift Solution, which was developed to remove engine modules from a large Liebherr R9800 excavator while the machine remained safely supported on jacks. The company described the solution as a world-first approach that demonstrated its ability to solve complex maintenance challenges through engineering innovation.

FMS Group communications manager Rainee Shepperson said the award reflected the efforts of the entire team and the company’s commitment to delivering safer and more efficient solutions for mining clients. She said the organisation’s focus has always been on solving real problems through innovation, engineering capability and safe work practices.

Established in 2005, FMS Group has grown from a Central Queensland mining services provider into a broader industrial maintenance company operating across Australia and Papua New Guinea. The company provides services including mobile and fixed plant maintenance, shutdown solutions, engineering support, electrical services, machining and equipment-related projects.

The recognition comes as Queensland’s mining sector continues to focus on improving safety, productivity and technology adoption. Events such as the Queensland Mining Awards provide an opportunity to showcase businesses that are developing new approaches to traditional mining challenges.

Mackay continues to play a central role in Queensland’s resources industry, with the region supporting thousands of mining-related jobs and hosting major industry events such as the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition. The city is widely recognised as a hub for mining services, engineering expertise and supply chain businesses supporting the Bowen Basin.

Industry leaders say local companies like FMS Group demonstrate the importance of regional innovation, showing that advanced engineering solutions are being developed outside major metropolitan centres.

The award represents a significant achievement for the Mackay business and highlights the capability of Queensland’s regional mining sector. By combining technical expertise, safety-focused practices and problem-solving approaches, FMS Group is helping shape the future of mining services in Australia.
