A magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the Banda Sea has rattled Darwin and surrounding parts of the Northern Territory, with residents reporting noticeable shaking across the city late Friday night.

The earthquake struck at approximately 9:28pm on September 11, 2026, in the Banda Sea east of Timor-Leste. The earthquake was initially recorded at a stronger magnitude before being revised to 5.9. It occurred at a depth of about 73 kilometres, according to the latest reports.

Although the earthquake occurred offshore, the tremor was strong enough to be felt across Darwin and a number of surrounding communities. Residents reported hearing rumbling sounds and feeling buildings, furniture and houses shake during the event.
