Northern Territory Police are investigating a series of alleged assaults in Alice Springs after four people were reportedly attacked with a crutch on Friday, 2 October 2026.

Police said they were first alerted at approximately 5:20 pm, when a 73-year-old man approached an officer at the Northside shops. The man reportedly had a significant open wound on his arm and alleged that he had been assaulted by a 40-year-old man carrying a crutch.

Following initial inquiries, police identified three additional people who were allegedly assaulted by the same man. The reported victims included two women, both aged 52, and a 48-year-old man.

A 73-year-old man and one of the 52-year-old women were taken to hospital for treatment. Details about the extent of their injuries have not been fully disclosed.

Police later located the 40-year-old man near the Todd River and took him into custody. Authorities further allege that he kicked a police officer while in custody. The alleged victims and the man were known to each other, according to police.

The incident has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported assaults. Authorities have not publicly established a motive, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

Police responses to incidents involving alleged violence can include gathering witness statements, examining available evidence and assessing the circumstances of each reported assault. Any charges and subsequent court proceedings would determine how the allegations are dealt with under the law.

The incident occurred amid other reported police activity in Alice Springs, although the separate events have not been identified as connected. Police have not indicated that the alleged assaults were part of a wider incident.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further information may be released as proceedings develop.
