A man has been arrested and charged with murder almost 10 months after a fatal stabbing that shocked the Wollongong community.

New South Wales Police allege the 41-year-old accused was responsible for the death of Brandon Yates, 28, who suffered critical injuries during an incident at a unit complex in Wollongong in August last year.

Emergency services were called to Crown Street, Wollongong, in the early hours of August 17, 2025, following reports that a man had been stabbed. Paramedics treated Mr Yates at the scene for serious chest injuries before he was transported to Wollongong Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to St George Hospital in Sydney, where he died six days later.

Following Mr Yates' death, detectives from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad established Strike Force Alcalde to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

After months of inquiries, police arrested a 41-year-old Wollongong man on Wednesday. Authorities allege the man was involved in the fatal stabbing and subsequently charged him with murder.

The accused was also charged with several unrelated offences, including driving while disqualified, receiving stolen property, and larceny-related offences, according to court documents.

Police also arrested a 30-year-old woman as part of the ongoing investigation. However, she had not been charged at the time of publication, with detectives continuing their inquiries.

The accused appeared before court via audiovisual link and did not apply for bail. He remains in custody and is expected to reappear before Wollongong Local Court at a later date.

The arrest has provided a significant development in a case that has deeply affected the victim's family and friends. During previous public appeals, loved ones of Brandon Yates urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Investigators have continued to rely on witness statements, forensic evidence and community assistance as part of their efforts to establish exactly what occurred on the night of the attack.
