A man has been charged following an alleged attack at an Islamic community Iftar dinner in Alfredton, Ballarat, earlier this year, after police completed an investigation into the incident.
Victoria Police allege the incident occurred on 8 March 2026 at the Djila-tjarriu Community Hub in Alfredton, where a Ramadan Iftar dinner was being held. Police allege a 37-year-old Alfredton man entered the venue at about 9:25pm, made abusive remarks, threatened people and assaulted attendees during the event.
The incident caused significant concern among members of Ballarat’s Muslim community, with attendees previously describing the event as frightening and distressing, particularly because families and children were present. Earlier reports said the man allegedly shouted abusive comments, intimidated attendees and disrupted the religious gathering.
Following the alleged confrontation, people at the venue detained the man until police arrived. Victoria Police said there were no reported physical injuries from the incident. The man was removed from the premises and police continued investigating the allegations.

The accused man has been summonsed to appear at Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on 10 September 2026. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the matter will now proceed through the legal system.

Muslim community leaders previously raised concerns about the impact of the incident on families who attended the dinner, saying events meant to bring people together should remain safe spaces for worship and community connection.
