A man has died after being restrained by workers and bystanders during a disturbance at a bottle shop in Brisbane's north, prompting a police investigation and a report to the Queensland Coroner.
Emergency services were called to a bottle shop on Barrett Street in Bracken Ridge at about 8:00pm on Wednesday, 1 July, following reports that a man armed with a screwdriver was causing a disturbance inside the premises.
According to Queensland Police, staff and members of the public intervened in an attempt to restrain the 36-year-old man before officers arrived. During the restraint, the man lost consciousness. Police and emergency responders immediately commenced CPR, but despite their efforts he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Detectives are continuing to investigate exactly what occurred before and during the restraint, including the sequence of events that led to the man's collapse. As is standard procedure in unexpected deaths, a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Police have not publicly released the man's identity, pending formal notification of his next of kin. They have also not indicated whether any charges are expected, stressing that the investigation remains in its early stages.
