A man has died following a single-vehicle crash on the Mitchell Highway near Wellington in New South Wales’ Central West. Emergency services were called to the highway at Apsley, approximately five kilometres south of Wellington, at about 4 am on Thursday, 15 October 2026, after receiving reports of a crash.

Officers from the Orana Mid-Western Police District attended the scene and found a vehicle that had left the roadway and crashed into a ditch. NSW Ambulance paramedics also responded, but the driver died at the scene.

Police said the man had not yet been formally identified when the initial report was released. Authorities established a crime scene and commenced inquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed. Police have not publicly established whether speed, road conditions, a mechanical issue or another factor contributed to the vehicle leaving the highway. These matters remain subject to investigation, and it would be premature to draw conclusions about how the crash occurred.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner, as part of the process for examining the circumstances of the death. The incident also affected traffic on the Mitchell Highway. Police reported that the highway was closed northbound between Molong and Burrendong Way while emergency services and investigators dealt with the scene. Motorists were advised to follow traffic directions and check for updated road conditions before travelling through the affected area.

The death has renewed attention on road safety along this section of the highway. In separate reporting published on 15 October, ABC News said the fatal crash prompted a local MP to call for upgrades, including additional overtaking lanes. That call relates to broader road-safety concerns and does not establish the cause of this particular crash.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that could assist the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can also be submitted through the NSW Crime Stoppers website. Investigators will continue working to establish the sequence of events leading to the crash. Further details may be released once the driver is formally identified and the investigation progresses.
