Petrol Station Fire Triggers Emergency Response in Tarro - Newcastle, NSW
Smart summary
Firefighters have contained a blaze involving two large gas cylinders at a service station on Anderson Drive, with a nearby home briefly threatened.
Emergency crews have responded to a significant fire at a petrol station in Tarro, Newcastle, after thick black smoke was reported rising from the site on Thursday morning.
Fire and Rescue NSW received multiple calls at about 10:15am on October 1 reporting a fire at a Metro service station on Anderson Drive. Crews arriving at the scene found that two 300-kilogram gas cylinders at the rear of the service station were involved in the fire.
The presence of the large gas cylinders created an additional hazard for emergency crews and nearby residents. A neighbouring home was reportedly under threat while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Around 25 firefighters from five stations, supported by a hazardous-materials team, attended the incident. Firefighters were able to extinguish the main fire and prevent it from spreading to the nearby property.
The service station building is believed to have suffered only minor damage, although crews continued checking the roof space to ensure that fire had not extended into other parts of the building.
One of the gas cylinders was still venting after the main fire had been brought under control. Fire and Rescue NSW crews used a fine water mist around the cylinder to help disperse the gas and reduce the possibility of the fire reigniting.
Emergency crews were expected to remain at the location for some time while the cylinders and surrounding area were made safe.
Anderson Drive was temporarily closed during the emergency response but had reopened by the time of the latest report. Motorists were advised to exercise caution around the area while emergency operations continued.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident once the site has been declared safe.
There were no reports in the latest information of serious injuries connected with the fire.
The incident comes during a busy period for emergency services across New South Wales, with authorities also monitoring fire risks and preparing for increased activity over the Labour Day long weekend.
The Tarro incident highlights the additional risks faced by firefighters when fires occur around fuel facilities and large gas cylinders. Hazmat crews are required to carefully manage the potential for gas release, fire spread and re-ignition.
Emergency services are continuing to monitor the site while the remaining cylinder is dealt with.
