A Tasmanian man has been jailed after terrorising families attending a Carols by Candlelight event in Launceston while armed with a machete, kitchen knife and multi-tool. The Supreme Court heard 48-year-old Daniel Gregory Woodward caused panic and alarm at the December 2025 community event when he behaved erratically and brandished the weapons near families and children. Police quickly intervened and arrested him before anyone was injured. Justice Robert Pearce sentenced Woodward to two years and three months in prison, saying the incident had shocked the public and required a strong response despite the offender’s history of mental illness and substance abuse.
