Northern Territory Police are investigating a serious assault in Wadeye after a 28-year-old man was allegedly shot in the chest with an arrow during the early hours of Thursday, 10 September 2026. The incident occurred shortly before 4am near the community’s main oval, with police receiving a report after the injured man presented at the Wadeye Health Clinic.

According to police, the man had been walking along a dirt track near the main oval when a vehicle allegedly stopped nearby. Another man is alleged to have exited the vehicle and fired an arrow at the victim before leaving the area. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation, and police have not publicly established a motive for the alleged attack.

The victim suffered a serious chest injury and was assessed as having a suspected punctured lung. After receiving medical attention in Wadeye, arrangements were made for him to be medically evacuated to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment. Police reported that the man was in a stable condition at the time of the report.

The alleged attack has prompted an investigation by detectives from the Northern Investigations Section. Police said detectives were travelling to Wadeye on Thursday to investigate the circumstances of the incident and speak with people who may have information about what happened.

Police have also identified persons of interest as part of their investigation. However, no charges had been announced in the report available at the time of publication. Authorities are continuing to establish the identity and movements of the person allegedly involved, as well as the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The incident occurred in the remote community of Wadeye, located southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Because of the seriousness of the man's injuries and the remote location, his transfer to Royal Darwin Hospital was an important part of the emergency medical response.

Authorities have not released further information about the victim's identity or the specific type of arrow involved. The available reporting also does not establish whether the alleged attack was planned or whether the victim and alleged offender knew each other.

Police are continuing to investigate and are expected to examine information from the scene, speak with witnesses and determine what led to the alleged assault. Any further developments, including potential arrests or charges, will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

For the Wadeye community, the incident represents another serious act of violence requiring a significant police and medical response. However, investigators have so far released only the basic circumstances of the alleged attack and have not drawn conclusions about the motive.

The victim's condition was described as stable after the suspected punctured lung, while detectives continued their investigation in Wadeye.
