Fifteen talented young singers from the Mid North Coast have been given a rare opportunity to work alongside Opera Australia, taking part in a professional production at Glasshouse Theatre in Port Macquarie. The initiative aims to nurture emerging performers while inspiring the next generation of Australian opera talent.
The selected performers, aged between 9 and 14 years, successfully auditioned for Opera Australia's Children's Chorus and are now undertaking months of rehearsals under the guidance of experienced music educators and chorus directors. Their hard work will culminate in a live performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Glasshouse Theatre on 8 August 2026.
The project gives young performers an opportunity rarely available outside Australia's major cities. During rehearsals they learn vocal technique, stage movement, timing, teamwork and professional theatre practices while working alongside internationally recognised opera singers, conductors and production staff.
Opera Australia says programs like the Children's Chorus help develop confidence, discipline and performance skills while encouraging young Australians to explore careers in the performing arts. Many professional opera performers began their careers through similar youth development initiatives.
The children will also experience rehearsals with the full orchestra, receive professional costumes and perform before a live audience in a fully staged production. For many participants, it will be their first appearance in a major national opera production, creating memories and experience that could influence future careers in music and theatre.
Parents and teachers have welcomed the opportunity, describing it as a chance for regional students to access world-class arts education without leaving their local community. The collaboration also highlights the importance of regional performing arts venues in providing professional cultural experiences outside metropolitan centres.
The Glasshouse Theatre has continued expanding its education programs by partnering with national arts organisations. Opera Australia's involvement provides local students with direct exposure to professional performers and creative teams while strengthening community participation in the arts.
Each participant will receive an official Certificate of Participation from Opera Australia after completing the program. Beyond the final performance, organisers hope the experience encourages young people to continue studying music, singing and performing arts throughout their education.
The initiative demonstrates that regional Australia continues to produce exceptional young talent capable of performing on major stages. By investing in youth development, Opera Australia and Glasshouse Port Macquarie are helping ensure the future of classical music and live theatre remains strong across the country.
