Authorities have launched a search for a 39-year-old fisherman who went missing near the Murray River in the Tocumwal area, prompting serious concern from police and his family.

The missing man, Patrick Evans, was last seen at Pebbly Beach campground on the Victorian side of the Murray River at approximately 10:30 am on Friday, 16 October 2026. Investigators believe he went fishing in a small boat on the river at around midday that day.

Concern grew when Evans could not be located or contacted. Officers from the Murray River Police District were notified and began inquiries into his whereabouts.

The search involves several emergency and specialist agencies, including the State Emergency Service (SES), NSW Maritime, Victoria Police and police divers. Their involvement reflects the need to search the river and surrounding areas where he was last known to be.

Police have expressed serious concerns for Evans's welfare. However, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance have not been fully established in the public appeal, and authorities have not confirmed what happened after he went fishing. Evans is described by police as being approximately 175 centimetres tall, with a slim build, a brown moustache and beard, and medium-length brown-blond hair. Police have asked members of the public to contact them if they have information that could help establish his movements or whereabouts.

The Murray River is a major waterway along parts of the New South Wales–Victoria border and is used for recreational activities, including boating and fishing. Searches in river environments can require coordination between police, maritime personnel and rescue teams to check relevant stretches of water and nearby locations. At the time of the police appeal published on 17 October, the search was continuing. No outcome should be assumed unless authorities issue a further confirmed update.

Police are urging anyone who saw Evans, noticed a small fishing boat in the area, or has information relevant to the search to come forward. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
