The Supreme Court of Western Australia has sentenced David James Pye to life imprisonment for masterminding the 2020 sniper-style murder of Nick Martin at Perth Motorplex. The court heard Pye hired former army reservist Benjamin Luke Johnston to carry out the assassination during a crowded raceway event attended by around 2,000 people. Johnston fired a single shot from a.308-calibre rifle approximately 365 metres away, striking Martin in the chest. The bullet also injured Martin’s son-in-law, Ricky Chapman, after passing through Martin’s body. Justice Joseph McGrath described the killing as deliberate, carefully planned and executed in a public setting that placed many lives at risk, including a young child seated nearby. Pye, a former butcher and tattoo artist linked to the Mongols Motorcycle Club, received a life sentence with a non-parole period of 34 years backdated to November 2021. His lawyer has indicated an appeal against the conviction will be lodged.
