Community members have called for a balance between environmental protection and recreational access as plans progress for the proposed Great Koala National Park (GKNP) on the NSW Mid North Coast.
A newly released consultation report, titled “What We Heard”, has highlighted that people want the future park to protect important koala habitat while continuing to provide opportunities for outdoor activities and tourism. The report summarises feedback gathered through one of the largest community consultations undertaken for a proposed national park in NSW, including almost 4,000 survey responses and more than 70 community meetings, forums and events.
The proposed Great Koala National Park is designed to protect some of NSW’s most important koala habitat and support threatened species conservation. Community feedback showed strong interest in protecting wildlife, preserving natural landscapes and ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy the region’s forests and outdoor spaces.
While conservation was a major priority, many residents also highlighted the importance of maintaining access for recreational activities. Popular activities currently enjoyed in the area include bushwalking, camping, sightseeing, wildlife watching, four-wheel driving, swimming, mountain biking and trail bike riding.
The consultation found that locals and visitors value the region not only for its environmental importance but also for its contribution to health, wellbeing and community connection. Many participants supported improved trails, visitor facilities, educational opportunities and nature-based tourism experiences that could benefit both residents and visitors.
Supporters of the park proposal say it could become a major conservation destination while also creating economic opportunities for regional communities. Increased nature tourism could support local businesses, including accommodation providers, hospitality operators, tour companies and outdoor recreation services.
However, the future management of the park will need to carefully consider different interests, including conservation groups, recreational users, Aboriginal communities, neighbouring landholders and regional industries.
The NSW Government has said the feedback will help guide future decisions about park boundaries, management approaches and visitor experiences. Consultation will continue with Aboriginal stakeholders, councils, tourism operators, conservation groups and recreation organisations.
