Thousands of Perth commuters experienced significant delays on Friday afternoon after a traffic crash blocked multiple lanes on the Kwinana Freeway southbound in Leeming, creating heavy congestion during one of the busiest travel periods of the week.
The incident occurred shortly after Farrington Road and was first reported by Main Roads Western Australia at approximately 4:09 pm. According to traffic authorities, the collision resulted in the closure of the two left southbound lanes, forcing motorists to merge into the remaining lane and causing traffic to quickly back up along the freeway.
Emergency services, including ambulance crews and towing operators, were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Responders worked to secure the area, assist those involved in the incident, and remove damaged vehicles from the roadway. At the time of the initial report, authorities had not released details regarding the number of vehicles involved or whether anyone had sustained injuries.
Main Roads WA urged motorists travelling through the area to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed when approaching the incident, and allow additional travel time due to heavy congestion. Drivers were also advised to merge safely as traffic passed the crash site, helping emergency personnel carry out their work safely.
The Kwinana Freeway is one of Perth's busiest transport corridors, connecting the city's southern suburbs with the central business district. Even minor incidents during afternoon peak periods can rapidly create lengthy traffic queues, affecting commuters travelling home and freight operators using the freeway.
Traffic conditions worsened as vehicles slowed approaching the lane closures, with congestion extending well beyond the immediate crash location. Many motorists sought alternative routes through surrounding suburbs, increasing traffic volumes on nearby local roads.
Police and traffic investigators are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision once the scene has been cleared. Investigations may consider factors such as traffic conditions, weather, driver behaviour and any mechanical issues that could have contributed to the crash. At this stage, authorities have not indicated whether speed, impairment or other contributing factors played a role.
The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of maintaining safe following distances and remaining alert during busy commuting periods, particularly in wet or congested conditions where sudden braking and lane changes can increase the likelihood of collisions.
As recovery operations continued, traffic authorities expected delays to persist until damaged vehicles were removed and all freeway lanes could be safely reopened. Motorists were encouraged to monitor official traffic updates before travelling and remain patient while emergency services completed their response.
