A 36-year-old man has been sentenced by the Northern Territory Supreme Court over a violent incident at Darwin Waterfront in March 2023, following his extradition from Perth in September 2026.

Christopher Holland, a Scottish-Australian man, appeared before the court this week after facing several serious charges arising from the incident. The court heard that Holland had been staying at Darwin Waterfront with his partner when the incident occurred.

According to agreed facts presented in court, Holland had been drinking champagne with his partner when he became violent. He assaulted her and forced her out into the building's lobby.

A 21-year-old off-duty Australian Defence Force soldier who lived in the building encountered the woman and attempted to assist her. When Holland confronted him, the situation escalated into a physical assault. The court heard that the soldier was struck approximately 30 times with punches, kicks, elbows and knees.

Two other men, both aged 42, subsequently intervened. They provided refuge to the woman and the soldier inside their apartment and contacted police. Before authorities arrived, Holland allegedly forced his way into their unit, injuring both men.

Holland faced charges including four counts of aggravated assault, unlawfully causing serious harm and aggravated unlawful entry. He was convicted on all charges by Justice Meredith Huntingford in the Northern Territory Supreme Court.
