A retail employee was injured in an alleged stabbing at a Spotlight store on Howard Road in Glenorchy, in Hobart's northern suburbs, on Sunday afternoon, 6 September 2026.

Tasmania Police said officers were called to the store at approximately 1:35pm after reports of an incident involving several people. Police allege that two men approached the rear of the store and stole an item. An employee subsequently approached the men and was allegedly assaulted. During the incident, the employee suffered a small knife wound.

The injured worker was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital, where he received medical treatment. Police later confirmed that he had been released from hospital. Spotlight said the employee was recovering at home and that the company was supporting him and other members of the store team following what it described as an extremely distressing incident.

Police attended the Howard Road store and conducted an investigation at the scene. Officers subsequently arrested two men overnight in connection with the incident.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with wounding, common assault, stealing, and drug- and bail-related offences. He was detained in custody and was due to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday, 7 September 2026.

A 34-year-old man was also taken into custody and remains with police while investigators continue their inquiries. At the time of the latest police update, the second man had not been charged.

The incident has prompted renewed discussion about the safety of retail workers in Hobart and Tasmania. Independent Elwick MLC Bec Thomas called for a stronger response to violence against workers and urged the Tasmanian Government to progress proposed workplace-protection and knife-related reforms.

Thomas said workers should not have to fear being threatened or assaulted while at work. She has called for measures including workplace protection orders, stronger powers and training for shopping-centre security staff, and restrictions on access to knives.

One proposed Tasmanian knife-law reform would restrict the sale or supply of knives to people under 18 and introduce requirements concerning the secure storage and display of knives by retailers. Consultation on the proposed legislation has taken place, but the reforms had not yet reached Parliament at the time of the report.

Business Greater Hobart has also raised concerns about retail-worker safety. The organisation said it was hearing concerns from retailers about increasingly aggressive behaviour towards employees and called for additional workplace safety and de-escalation training. Tasmania Police data cited by ABC showed 399 assaults at retail stores during the 2025–26 financial year.

Tasmanian Government minister Nick Duigan said the government considered the alleged stabbing unacceptable and maintained that people should be able to work and go about their daily activities safely. He pointed to existing police powers and forthcoming legislation aimed at addressing community safety.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the alleged assault and theft.
