Australian tennis player Talia Gibson has reached the first WTA Tour-level singles final of her career at the Singapore Open after her semifinal opponent, Tatiana Prozorova, withdrew before the match.

Gibson, 22, was scheduled to play Russian world number 180 Prozorova in the semifinal. However, Prozorova was ruled unable to compete after undergoing an assessment following an incident during an earlier doubles match.

The Russian player had been struck during the doubles match and subsequently received medical attention. She and her doubles partner later retired from that match.

Prozorova said the ball mostly struck her shoulder and only grazed her cheek. She later described her experience with the tournament's concussion assessment process on social media.

According to Prozorova, a physiotherapist required her to leave the court for a medical assessment. She said she struggled with part of the assessment, including a balance exercise that involved standing on one leg with her eyes closed.

Prozorova said she believed she was physically well enough to continue but was told she would need to take several days away from tennis. She criticised the process and said she felt pressured during the decision-making process.

Those comments represent Prozorova's account of what occurred. The WTA had been contacted for comment at the time of the ABC report.

Gibson therefore progressed to the Singapore Open final without having to play the semifinal.

The result marks a significant milestone in Gibson's professional career. She had already produced a notable performance in the tournament by defeating seventh seed Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals.

Her run in Singapore has now taken her into her maiden singles final at WTA Tour level.

Gibson's opponent in the final will be determined by the other semifinal between Poland's Maya Chwalinska and Canada's Leylah Fernandez. Chwalinska reached the French Open final earlier this year, while Fernandez was a US Open finalist in 2021.

The Singapore tournament has therefore provided Gibson with an opportunity to compete against established players on the international tennis circuit.

The circumstances surrounding Prozorova's withdrawal have also brought attention to concussion protocols in professional tennis. Medical assessments are intended to protect players following possible head injuries, but Prozorova has questioned aspects of how the process was applied in her case.

She said the decision ended what had been a successful week for her after she had defeated third seed Alex Eala earlier in the tournament.

Prozorova also said she was concerned that being required to rest could affect her ability to qualify for the China Open in Beijing, which begins on September 30.

For Gibson, the focus now turns to the Singapore Open final. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding her semifinal, reaching a first WTA singles final represents a new stage in the young Australian's professional career.

The final will give Gibson the opportunity to compete for her first WTA Tour singles title.

Her progression also comes after a quarterfinal victory over Sakkari, demonstrating the level of competition she has faced during the tournament.

The final opponent will be confirmed after the second semifinal, with Gibson preparing for the biggest singles match of her WTA career so far.
