A teenage boy has died after being found critically injured outside Craigieburn Community Hospital in Melbourne's northern suburbs, prompting a homicide investigation and the arrest of several young people.
Emergency services were called to the medical centre on Lygon Drive, Craigieburn, at about 7:50pm on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, after reports that a teenage boy had been seriously injured. The 15-year-old, from Mickleham, was found with what police believe were stab wounds. A staff member from the nearby medical centre immediately began CPR before paramedics arrived, but despite their efforts, the teenager died at the scene.
Victoria Police established a crime scene outside the hospital, with Homicide Squad detectives taking charge of the investigation. Officers spent several hours examining the area, collecting forensic evidence and speaking with witnesses in an effort to determine exactly what led to the fatal attack. Police appealed to anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage or other information from the area to contact Crime Stoppers.
Within hours of the incident, investigators arrested a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man in Pascoe Vale, approximately 30 minutes from the crime scene. Following further investigations, police announced on 3 July that the 16-year-old had been charged with murder and remanded in custody to appear before a children's court at a later date. The 20-year-old man was charged with criminal damage by fire and granted bail, while a 15-year-old girl was charged with affray and theft of a motor vehicle. Police also interviewed another 15-year-old boy as part of the ongoing investigation.
Friends and family gathered outside the hospital to leave flowers and photographs in memory of the teenager, who was remembered as a loyal, caring and humorous friend. One close friend told ABC News he had witnessed the incident and attempted to help, describing the victim as someone who "didn't deserve this." Other friends said they were struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of someone they described as having "a pure, beautiful heart."
A spokesperson for Northern Health, which operates Craigieburn Community Hospital, confirmed hospital staff had discovered the injured teenager in the hospital car park and immediately attempted life-saving treatment. The health service expressed condolences to the victim's family and said counselling and wellbeing support were being provided to staff affected by the traumatic incident.
The fatal stabbing has renewed concern about youth violence in Melbourne's northern suburbs. Local residents described the incident as deeply shocking, noting the large emergency response that remained at the hospital for several hours. Community members have also called for stronger measures to address knife crime involving young people.
Police say the investigation remains active and further arrests or charges are possible as detectives continue examining the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death.
