A truck driver has been arrested and charged following a fatal collision involving a utility vehicle and a truck on Mannum Road in South Australia.

South Australia Police said emergency services were called to Mannum Road shortly after 11 am on Friday, 16 October 2026, after the two vehicles collided. The crash occurred near Mannum, a town in the Murray Mallee region, east of Adelaide. The driver of the utility was a 76-year-old local man. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. His passenger, a 72-year-old local woman, sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital. Police described her injuries as serious but not life-threatening.

The truck was driven by a 35-year-old man from Salisbury, Adelaide’s northern suburbs. He was not injured in the collision. Major Crash Investigators attended the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Their investigation led to the truck driver being arrested on Friday, the day of the collision.

Police charged the driver with causing death by dangerous driving and causing harm by dangerous driving. He was also issued an immediate loss-of-licence notice, which remains in effect until further order. The accused driver was granted bail and is scheduled to appear before the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 15 December 2026.

The investigation concerns the circumstances that led to the collision, including the actions of the drivers before the vehicles struck each other. Police have not provided enough publicly confirmed information to establish precisely how the crash occurred, so the cause should not be assumed before the legal process and investigation progress. The fatality adds to South Australia’s road toll. According to the police statement published on 17 October, the death was the 88th life lost on South Australian roads in 2026 at the time of the announcement.

The incident also highlights the serious consequences that can follow collisions involving heavy vehicles and passenger vehicles on regional roads. Police investigations into fatal crashes can involve examination of the vehicles, the roadway and other available evidence to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The charges against the truck driver remain allegations, and the case will be considered by the court. The accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the legal process. Police have not announced a final determination of the crash’s cause. Further details may emerge as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
