The proposed development, known as Celeste, would include about 200 apartments and penthouses within the new Maroochydore City Centre. The project has been proposed by Sydney-based developer Walker Corporation.
The proposed building would become the Sunshine Coast’s tallest structure if approved, reaching close to the maximum height currently permitted for a landmark building in the new city centre.
Supporters of increased development argue that concentrating higher-density housing within the Maroochydore CBD could help accommodate population growth while limiting pressure for high-rise development along the coastal strip.
However, some residents are concerned that approving a building of this scale could encourage further increases in building heights across the region.
The Sunshine Coast has historically been associated with relatively low-rise coastal communities, and some residents fear that a move towards taller buildings could change the character of the region.
Community concerns have also focused on whether the proposed development could establish a precedent for additional high-rise projects in the future.
Other residents acknowledge that population growth is creating a need for additional housing and believe the CBD is an appropriate location for increased density.
