Sydney’s historic Leichhardt Oval is set to receive a major transformation after a $40 million redevelopment plan was announced for the Inner West sporting venue. The project aims to modernise facilities while maintaining the ground’s importance as one of Sydney’s most recognised community sporting locations.

The redevelopment will include improvements to spectator facilities, new player amenities and upgrades designed to make the venue more suitable for a wider range of sporting events. Plans include a new northern grandstand, additional seating improvements, upgraded change rooms, improved public facilities and new spaces for community use.

Leichhardt Oval has a long history in Sydney sport and has hosted thousands of rugby league matches, community events and local competitions over many decades. Supporters and local leaders have welcomed the investment, saying the redevelopment will help protect the venue’s future while providing better facilities for athletes, fans and community groups.

Funding for the project is being shared between the Federal Government, NSW Government and Inner West Council. Officials said the investment reflects the importance of maintaining local sporting infrastructure as Sydney’s population continues to grow.

The redevelopment is expected to begin after the 2026 sporting season, with construction planned to continue through to 2028. During construction, event organisers will work with authorities to manage scheduling and access arrangements for users of the venue.

Local residents have welcomed the improvements but have also called for careful planning to minimise disruption during construction. Authorities said community consultation will continue throughout the project to ensure the redevelopment meets the needs of residents and sporting organisations.

The upgraded venue is expected to support professional sport, grassroots competitions and community events. Officials believe the improvements will help attract more visitors to the Inner West area and strengthen Sydney’s sporting culture.

Leichhardt Oval’s redevelopment represents a significant investment in Sydney’s future sporting infrastructure, ensuring the historic venue can continue serving players, families and fans for generations.
