Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple has announced that he will not seek re-election for a fifth term, ending a tenure that began when he was first elected sheriff in 2011.

Before becoming sheriff, Apple served as the Undersheriff, giving him decades of experience within the Albany County Sheriff's Office. During his time as sheriff, he oversaw law enforcement operations, corrections, civil enforcement and emergency response across Albany County, New York.

Apple said the decision not to seek another term follows careful consideration and marks the conclusion of a long career in public service. He has served four consecutive terms as sheriff and has become one of the county's longest-serving elected law enforcement officials.

Throughout his leadership, the Sheriff's Office expanded community policing initiatives, strengthened emergency preparedness and modernized several public safety programs. Apple also worked closely with local, state and federal agencies on major investigations and regional public safety operations.

Local officials and community leaders have thanked Apple for his years of service and dedication to Albany County. The announcement is expected to begin the race to succeed him in the upcoming election.

Craig Apple will continue serving as sheriff until the end of his current term before a newly elected sheriff takes office.
