Premier Jacinta Allan’s government is preparing emergency legislation to restore Victoria’s political donations framework after the High Court struck down the existing laws in April 2026. The proposed reforms would more than double the donation cap from about $4,970 to at least $10,000 — and possibly as high as $25,000 — while also increasing public funding for political parties and independent MPs. The overhaul comes amid concerns that Victoria currently has no enforceable donation caps, disclosure rules or foreign donation bans ahead of the November election. The changes are also expected to remove loopholes that previously allowed major parties to use “nominated entities” such as the Liberal-linked Cormack Foundation to bypass caps.
