Dozens of people gathered in the Cairns region to remember Savannah Spence Paige following her death in a serious crash on the Smithfield Bypass.

The community gathering provided an opportunity for family, friends and others to pay tribute to the crash victim and reflect on the impact of the tragedy.

Savannah was killed in a collision involving an allegedly stolen vehicle on the Smithfield Bypass earlier this month. Police have alleged that the crash occurred after a man driving the stolen vehicle was involved in a serious incident that resulted in one person being killed and several others injured.

The latest community vigil has brought renewed attention to the consequences of dangerous driving and vehicle-related crime in the Cairns region.

People attending the gathering lit candles and came together to remember Savannah. Vigils following fatal road crashes can provide an important opportunity for communities to support grieving families while also highlighting the wider impact of road trauma.

The Smithfield Bypass is an important transport route north of Cairns, carrying significant volumes of local traffic. Serious crashes on the road can therefore affect many people and often require large emergency responses.
