The federal Coalition has announced plans to tie overseas migration levels to Australia’s housing supply, arguing the move would help reduce pressure on the nation’s housing market. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said migration numbers should be capped according to the availability of homes, infrastructure, and essential services. Coalition modelling claims Australia is facing a housing shortfall of around 400,000 dwellings compared with recent population growth, much of which has been driven by overseas migration. While the Coalition has not confirmed a specific migration cap, the policy is expected to include provisions for skilled workers needed in critical industries. Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged housing affordability remains a major national challenge and said the government is investing billions into housing supply and affordability measures under its national housing target.
