The family of Kumanjayi White has been told no criminal charges will be laid against the police officers involved in the incident that led to his death in custody in Alice Springs last year. The announcement comes one day before the first anniversary of the 24-year-old Warlpiri man’s death after he was restrained by two police officers inside a supermarket in Alice Springs in May 2025. The ABC reports that Northern Territory Police are expected to provide an official update on the investigation. The case has drawn national attention and renewed scrutiny of Indigenous deaths in custody across Australia. In a statement released through supporters, Mr White’s family expressed grief and disappointment after learning that no officers would be prosecuted. Community members and Aboriginal organisations are expected to hold memorial events and calls for justice around the anniversary. The incident sparked protests and public debate over policing practices, restraint mthods and treatment of Aboriginal people in custody in the Northern Territory.
