Australians are continuing to leave major cities in growing numbers, with new data showing migration from metropolitan centres to regional communities has reached record levels.
The latest Regional Movers Index, compiled by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) and the Commonwealth Bank, found regional Australia remains a highly attractive destination for people seeking more affordable housing, improved lifestyles and greater flexibility in where they live and work.
The report indicates that although movement patterns have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, regional communities continue to experience strong population growth. Many Australians are choosing regional locations to access larger homes, lower living costs and a closer connection to community life.
According to the findings, regional migration remains well above pre-pandemic levels. Queensland, Western Australia and several coastal and inland regional centres have been among the strongest beneficiaries of the trend.
Housing affordability remains a major factor influencing relocation decisions. Rising property prices and rental costs in capital cities have encouraged many families, retirees and remote workers to consider regional alternatives.
The report also highlights the ongoing impact of flexible and hybrid work arrangements. Many employees are now able to live further from traditional business districts while maintaining employment with organisations based in major cities.
Regional leaders say population growth can bring significant economic benefits, including increased demand for local businesses, infrastructure and services. However, it can also place pressure on housing availability, healthcare services and transport networks if growth outpaces planning.
The Regional Australia Institute said continued investment in infrastructure, telecommunications, healthcare and education would be essential to support sustainable regional growth.
Researchers noted that while capital cities continue to attract international migrants, regional Australia is increasingly becoming a preferred destination for Australians relocating within the country.
