Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is focusing its investment priorities on essential infrastructure, with Mayor Adam Roberts saying the region must build strong foundations to support continued population growth.
Mayor Roberts said the council cannot deliver every community request immediately and must instead focus on projects that provide the greatest long-term benefit. He said prioritising core infrastructure would help create the conditions needed for sustainable development and future growth across the region.
The Port Macquarie-Hastings region has experienced significant growth in recent years, creating increased demand for reliable roads, transport networks, water supplies, wastewater services and community facilities. Council planning documents identify infrastructure delivery as a key priority to ensure growth is supported by appropriate services.
Mayor Roberts said council resources must be carefully managed, with available funding directed towards projects that have the biggest impact on residents and businesses.
“Instead of dealing with all the wants, we can deliver what we can, but what we are delivering on is that core infrastructure as a priority that really sets the foundation for growth,” Mayor Roberts said.
The council has highlighted several major infrastructure projects designed to support the region’s future needs. These include improvements to transport networks, water security projects, wastewater upgrades and other essential services required to accommodate population increases.
One of the major challenges facing the region is ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with development. Council planning documents have previously identified that growth pressures have increased demand on existing systems, including roads, traffic networks and water and wastewater capacity.
Major projects such as the Thrumster Wastewater Treatment Plant, Cowarra Water Supply Scheme and road upgrades have been identified as important investments to support future housing and economic growth.
Council has also continued advocating for additional support from the NSW and Federal governments, arguing that regional councils require external funding assistance to deliver major infrastructure projects.
The council’s infrastructure strategy focuses on building sustainable systems that support residents, businesses and visitors while preparing for future population increases. Key areas include transport infrastructure, water services, waste management, social facilities and environmental assets.
