Orchid enthusiasts and gardening lovers are being treated to one of North Queensland's most colourful winter events as the Townsville Orchid Society opens its annual Winter Orchid Show in Kirwan. Running from 3 to 5 July 2026, the exhibition showcases thousands of orchids in bloom, bringing together experienced growers, collectors and members of the public for a celebration of one of the world's most diverse flowering plant families.
Held at the Townsville Orchid Society Hall on Charles Street, Kirwan, the event features an extensive display of orchids grown by society members, alongside a large sales area where visitors can purchase orchids and other plants. The exhibition also includes competitive judging, with growers competing across numerous categories for awards including the prestigious Grand Champion Orchid.
Society publicity officer Joseph Walker said the Winter Show is one of the region's premier floral events and provides a rare opportunity for people to admire an enormous range of orchid varieties in a single location. He said the diversity of colours, shapes and species is one of the main reasons orchids continue to fascinate both experienced collectors and newcomers. According to Walker, producing an award-winning orchid requires patience, skill and careful attention to presentation, as judges assess not only flower quality but also plant shape and overall appearance.
The event is designed to be educational as well as entertaining. Volunteers and experienced orchid growers are stationed throughout the venue to answer questions, demonstrate growing techniques and offer advice on watering, fertilising, repotting and pest management. Organisers hope these conversations will encourage more people to take up orchid growing, whether they are purchasing their first plant or expanding an existing collection.
Beyond the competitive displays, the show provides an important opportunity for the Townsville Orchid Society to promote orchid conservation and recruit new members. The society regularly conducts meetings and educational activities throughout the year and says events such as the Winter Show help introduce younger generations to horticulture and plant cultivation.
Entry to the exhibition is $3 for adults, while children are admitted free, making it an affordable family outing during the winter school holidays. Organisers expect strong attendance across the weekend, particularly given the favourable winter weather and the popularity of gardening events throughout North Queensland. The exhibition is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 9:00am to 2:00pm on Sunday. EFTPOS facilities are available for visitors purchasing orchids and gardening supplies.
