Emergency crews responded to a major apartment fire in the Gold Coast suburb of Miami after flames engulfed the top floor of a residential unit complex, sending thick black smoke billowing across the area and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Queensland Fire Department crews were called to the incident on Tuesday morning, with emergency dispatchers receiving multiple Triple Zero calls reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the upper level of the building. On arrival, firefighters found the top-floor unit "well involved" in fire, with flames threatening to spread to neighbouring apartments.
Five fire crews, including an aerial appliance, worked for almost two hours to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters used elevated platforms and multiple hose lines to attack the fire from above while ensuring residents from surrounding units were safely evacuated. Their efforts prevented the flames from spreading further through the complex, although the affected apartment sustained extensive damage.
Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics assessed one man at the scene after he escaped the burning apartment. He was treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation but did not require immediate transport to hospital. Authorities confirmed there were no reports of serious injuries among other residents or emergency personnel.
Residents described seeing dense smoke rising high above the suburb, with the plume visible from surrounding beaches and nearby sections of the Gold Coast Highway. Several neighbouring properties were temporarily affected by smoke while emergency crews established exclusion zones around the unit block to allow firefighters safe access to the building.
Police assisted with traffic management and ensured nearby residents remained clear of the emergency operation while firefighters continued working to extinguish hotspots within the damaged apartment. Utility providers were also called to isolate electricity and other essential services before crews entered the structure to complete final checks.
Once the fire was extinguished, specialist fire investigators began examining the scene to determine how the blaze started. At this stage, authorities have not identified the cause of the fire, and investigations remain ongoing.
