A Rockhampton man has been sentenced to three years in prison after being caught with a homemade firearm and committing a series of violent domestic violence and theft offences. The Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard that Anthony William Butler possessed and discharged an illegal “slam gun” on several occasions between late 2025 and early 2026. Police discovered videos on his phone allegedly showing him firing the homemade weapon in public areas, along with instructions for manufacturing drugs. The court was told Butler also bit his partner’s face during a domestic violence incident, stole alcohol and tools, damaged property and obstructed police. Magistrate Peter Kuskie described the possession of the untraceable firearm as “extremely alarming” and highlighted Butler’s criminal history, including a previous suspended sentence for arson. Butler pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including illegal possession of a weapon, discharging a firearm in a public place, stealing and possessing instructions for producing dangerous drugs. He will be eligible for parole in March 2027 and will face further proceedings for breaching an earlier suspended sentence.
