Wollongong City Council has announced a significant increase in funding for its 2026–27 Sports Grants Program, providing a larger pool of financial support for local sporting clubs and community organisations. The program aims to help clubs improve facilities, purchase equipment and deliver projects that encourage greater participation in sport across the Wollongong Local Government Area.
This year's program offers a A$500,000 funding pool, representing a A$100,000 increase compared with the previous financial year. Council said the additional investment reflects the important role that community sporting clubs play in promoting active lifestyles, social connection and community wellbeing.
Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown said Wollongong has a wide variety of sporting clubs that rely heavily on volunteers to operate successfully. She acknowledged the contribution made by local volunteers and said the grants program is designed to provide clubs with financial assistance for projects that strengthen facilities and improve opportunities for participants of all ages.
Eligible clubs and sporting associations can apply for funding to support projects such as facility upgrades, equipment purchases, accessibility improvements, storage solutions and other initiatives that enhance the quality of local sporting infrastructure. Council said applications will be assessed against established criteria to ensure funding delivers long-term benefits to the community. To help organisations prepare stronger applications, Wollongong City Council will host an online information session led by members of its Sports and Recreation team. The session will explain the application process, outline the assessment criteria and provide practical guidance on preparing competitive grant submissions. Council will also offer one-on-one assistance for clubs seeking additional support before lodging their applications.
The Sports Grants Program aligns with Council's broader sports strategy, which focuses on increasing participation in community sport, expanding the capacity of sporting facilities, improving accessibility, supporting gender equity and investing in infrastructure that accommodates emerging sports and recreational activities. Council believes these priorities will help meet the growing needs of Wollongong's diverse sporting community.
Applications for the 2026–27 Sports Grants Program will remain open until midnight on Sunday, 23 August 2026. Sporting clubs are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements carefully and consult with council staff before submitting their applications to maximise their chances of success.
Council said continued investment in community sport delivers benefits beyond competition by encouraging healthier lifestyles, creating inclusive community spaces and supporting volunteer organisations that contribute significantly to local life. Officials hope the expanded grants program will enable more clubs to improve facilities and provide better experiences for players, officials and spectators.
The funding initiative forms part of Wollongong City Council's ongoing commitment to strengthening community infrastructure and ensuring local sporting organisations have the resources needed to continue growing and serving residents across the region.
