Victorian motorists have been caught in a frustrating technology outage after a major Vic Roads system upgrade left drivers unable to complete essential transactions, including paying vehicle registration, renewing licences and accessing digital driving credentials.
The disruption began following a planned system upgrade over the King's Birthday long weekend, but technical issues persisted for several days, affecting millions of Victorians who rely on Vic Roads' online services.
Among the services impacted were:
* Vehicle registration payments (rego renewals) * Driver licence renewals * Digital driver licence access * Driving test bookings * Online account logins * Vehicle transfer services * Hazard perception test access for learner drivers
Vic Roads manages registrations and licensing services for more than five million Victorian motorists, making the outage one of the most significant disruptions to the state's transport systems in recent years.
Frustrated customers reported being unable to access the website for days, with some expressing concerns that their registrations would expire before they could make payments.
One driver told local media they had been trying unsuccessfully to renew their registration for nearly 48 hours while the Vic Roads website continued displaying notices about ongoing upgrades.
Learner drivers were also affected, with some unable to complete mandatory hazard perception testing, potentially delaying scheduled driving tests. Vic Roads said impacted customers were being contacted directly to arrange alternative appointments where necessary.
Despite the widespread disruptions, Vic Roads advised that several alternative payment methods remained available.
Customers were encouraged to:
* Visit Vic Roads Customer Service Centres. * Contact the Vic Roads Call Centre. * Use BPAY if they had the relevant payment information from previous renewal notices.
A Vic Roads spokesperson apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outage.
"Vic Roads completed a planned system upgrade over the weekend as part of ongoing work to improve services for Victorians," the spokesperson said.
"If customers do have trouble accessing a service, we recommend trying again a little later, or using another available service channel if needed."
The agency did not provide a firm timeline for when all services would return to normal, although technicians continued working to stabilise the upgraded systems.
The incident has renewed concerns about the reliability of critical government digital infrastructure, particularly as more public services transition to online-only platforms.
Motorists affected by the outage have been advised to keep records of any attempted transactions and monitor official Vic Roads updates for further information.
The official Vic Roads website currently acknowledges that some online services remain unavailable due to the ongoing system upgrade.
While authorities expect services to gradually resume, the outage has highlighted how dependent many Australians have become on digital access for everyday government transactions.
For Victorian drivers facing imminent registration or licence deadlines, officials recommend using alternative service channels until the website is fully restored.
