The Greater Shepparton community is remembering Millicent McNeill OAM as an extraordinary volunteer, educator, community leader and devoted family woman whose lifetime of service touched countless lives.

Millicent McNeill passed away peacefully on 6 July 2026, aged 83, leaving behind a legacy built on kindness, generosity and an unwavering commitment to helping others. A memorial service celebrating her life was held on 16 July at The Woolshed at Emerald Bank, where family, friends and community members gathered to honour her remarkable contribution.

Born in Shepparton on 13 July 1942, Millicent grew up in a close-knit family before later becoming a teacher and one of the region's most respected volunteers. Throughout her life she dedicated countless hours to supporting schools, sporting clubs, charitable organisations and community groups.

Millicent married Bruce McNeill in 1964, and together they built both a successful family life and a strong tradition of community service. While Bruce developed the family's business, Millicent managed the household, assisted with the company's accounts and raised their two children, Christopher and Jane.

Her commitment to volunteering began at a young age through the Girl Guides, where she progressed from member to leader and later served in senior leadership roles. She also became deeply involved in local schools, sporting clubs and fundraising activities, always willing to help wherever support was needed.

One of Millicent's most significant contributions came through the Australian Red Cross, where she devoted almost four decades of service. During her time with the organisation she held numerous leadership positions, including branch chairperson, treasurer, publicity officer, Victorian Divisional Advisory Board member and emergency services volunteer. She also supported emergency catering operations for many years, assisting communities during times of crisis.

Millicent's dedication was recognised through numerous honours during her lifetime. She received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), the Centenary Medal, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship, honorary life membership of the Australian Red Cross and several long-service and distinguished service awards. These recognitions reflected decades of tireless volunteer work rather than any desire for personal recognition.

Beyond her formal achievements, family members described Millicent as a loving wife, mother and grandmother whose greatest joy came from supporting those around her. She was known for organising memorable family celebrations, caring for loved ones through difficult times and always putting others before herself.

Following Bruce McNeill's diagnosis with dementia in 2016, Millicent became his full-time carer until his passing in 2018 after 54 years of marriage. Even after this difficult period, she remained active in community life, continued volunteering and enjoyed travelling with friends and spending time with her grandchildren.

Despite facing serious health challenges in recent years, including severe sepsis and a major car accident that affected her mobility, Millicent remained positive and continued contributing wherever possible.

Her family believes she possessed exceptional organisational and leadership abilities that could have made her a highly successful businesswoman. Instead, she chose to dedicate those talents to strengthening her family and serving the wider community.

Millicent McNeill's life stands as a powerful example of compassion, generosity and civic responsibility. Her legacy will continue through the organisations she supported, the people she inspired and the countless lives she enriched through decades of selfless service.
