Tributes have flowed for Samuel Michael Pedrazzini, a former Australian soldier from the Northern Rivers region of NSW, who was killed while serving as a combat medic in Ukraine.

Sam Pedrazzini, aged 26, was remembered by his hometown community as a kind, respectful and passionate young man who dedicated himself to helping others. Friends, former teachers, teammates and local residents have expressed their heartbreak following news of his death during a frontline mission in Ukraine.

Sam grew up in the Northern Rivers area and was well known through his involvement in local sport, including playing rugby for the Lennox Trojans. Former teammates and coaches described him as a friendly and well-mannered person who made a positive impact on those around him.

He was also remembered by his former school community at Xavier Catholic College, where staff and students described him as a popular student known for his warmth, character and joyful spirit. The school extended condolences to Sam’s parents, Leonie and Timothy Pedrazzini, and to his wider family and friends.

Sam previously served in the Australian Defence Force, where he worked as a specialist combat medic and helped train Ukrainian soldiers as part of Australia's support efforts. After leaving the ADF in 2025, he chose to continue supporting Ukraine by volunteering his medical skills on the frontline.

Reports state that Sam joined Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Special Operations Regiment and was killed during a combat mission in the Donetsk region in June 2026. He had reportedly been serving with the unit for only a short period before his death.

His commitment to Ukraine was praised by Ukrainian officials, including Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko, who said Sam served not because he was obligated to, but because of his personal conviction and desire to help. He was remembered for saving lives and standing alongside Ukrainian forces during the conflict.

Sam’s parents travelled to Ukraine to attend his funeral and farewell ceremony. His burial took place in Ivano-Frankivsk, where family members, fellow soldiers and supporters gathered to honour his service and sacrifice.
