Thousands of police officers across Australia have been advised to disable Bluetooth functions on Axon body-worn cameras during raids and covert operations after a security flaw was exposed in an investigation by ABC’s Four Corners. The report found that Axon-branded tasers and body cameras, widely used by police forces nationwide, could potentially reveal the real-time locations of undercover and tactical officers through simple phone apps. Following the broadcast, Victoria Police issued an urgent safety alert to around 15,000 officers, recommending Bluetooth be disabled or devices placed into “flight mode” when detection posed a risk. Authorities are now conducting risk assessments and consulting with Axon on additional safeguards to protect officer safety.
